Bicalutamide, the active ingredient in Casodex, is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen that competitively inhibits the action of androgens by binding to the androgen receptor.
Pharmacological Properties
Casodex exerts its pharmacological effects by blocking the stimulatory effect of androgens on the growth of prostate cancer cells. It helps in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer by inhibiting the androgen receptors in the tumor.

Side Effects
The common side effects of Casodex may include hot flashes, decreased libido, gynecomastia, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Rare but serious side effects may include liver function abnormalities and lung disease.
Usage Instructions
Take Casodex as directed by your healthcare provider. The recommended dosage is one tablet (50 mg) once daily, to be taken at the same time each day. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double doses.
Benefits Compared to Analogues
Casodex offers the advantage of being a well-tolerated and effective treatment for prostate cancer when used in combination therapy. Its nonsteroidal antiandrogen properties provide a targeted approach to managing the disease with a favorable side effect profile compared to some analogues.
Suitable Patient Groups
Casodex is suitable for adult male patients with prostate cancer, particularly those with advanced disease. It is not indicated for use in women or children due to the specific mechanism of action and potential adverse effects on hormone balance.
