Composition
The active ingredient in Ceftractam is Ceftriaxone, with each vial containing 1000 mg/500 mg of Ceftriaxone.
Mechanism of Action
Ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin, exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death.
Pharmacological Properties
Ceftriaxone demonstrates broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It has excellent penetration into tissues and achieves high concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid.
Indications for Use
Ceftractam is indicated for the treatment of bacterial meningitis, bacterial septicemia, intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, bone and joint infections, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Contraindications
Ceftractam is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to cephalosporins. It is also contraindicated in neonates requiring calcium-containing IV solutions due to the risk of precipitation.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Ceftractam may include gastrointestinal disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, and superinfections. Severe adverse effects such as anaphylaxis and pseudomembranous colitis have been reported rarely.
Usage Instructions
Ceftractam is for intravenous use only and should be administered by a qualified healthcare professional. The powder must be reconstituted with a suitable IV diluent prior to administration.
Benefits Compared to Analogues
Ceftractam offers the advantage of once-daily dosing, convenient administration, and a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity compared to other cephalosporins.
Suitable Patient Groups
Ceftractam is suitable for use in both adult and pediatric populations, including elderly patients. Dosing adjustments may be necessary in patients with renal impairment.
Storage and Shelf Life
Ceftractam should be stored at controlled room temperature away from light and moisture. The shelf life of the product is as indicated on the packaging.
Packaging Description
