Description

Dexilant (Dexlansoprazole) Modified Release Capsules 60 mg – Pack of 14

Composition

Each hard capsule contains 60 mg of dexlansoprazole.

Mechanism of Action

Dexilant is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by selectively inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in the gastric parietal cells. This action leads to a dose-dependent inhibition of gastric acid secretion.

Pharmacological Properties

Dexlansoprazole, the active enantiomer of lansoprazole, exhibits properties of a PPI by irreversibly blocking the proton pumps in the stomach, resulting in decreased acid secretion and increased gastric pH.

Indications for Use

Dexilant is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) to promote healing of erosive esophagitis and provide long-term maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis.

Contraindications

Do not use Dexilant if you have a known hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole, lansoprazole, or any component of the formulation. Use caution in patients with hepatic impairment.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Dexilant may include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, and headache. Rare but serious side effects may include severe allergic reactions, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, and vitamin B12 deficiency.

Usage Instructions

The recommended dosage of Dexilant is one 60 mg capsule taken orally once daily, with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water and do not crush or chew it. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

Benefits Compared to Analogues

Dexilant, due to its unique modified release formulation, offers extended duration of acid suppression compared to other PPIs, leading to improved symptom control and healing rates in patients with acid-related disorders.

Suitable Patient Groups

Dexilant is suitable for adult patients with GERD and erosive esophagitis. It is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age. Dosage adjustment is not necessary for elderly patients or those with mild to moderate renal impairment.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store Dexilant capsules in a cool, dry place at room temperature below 30°C. Keep the capsules in the original packaging to protect from moisture. The shelf life of Dexilant is typically 24 months from the date of manufacture.

Packaging Description

Dexilant capsules are packed in blister packs of 14 capsules each. The packaging is designed to maintain the stability and integrity of the product until the expiry date.
