Additional Information
Metoclopramide has prokinetic and antiemetic properties, making it a first-line treatment for gastroparesis. It is generally well-tolerated, but long-term use may lead to side effects like tardive dyskinesia.
Pharmacological Effects: Metoclopramide acts as a dopamine antagonist, stimulating gastrointestinal motility and enhancing gastric emptying. It also has antiemetic properties by blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.
Clinical Trials: Research has shown the efficacy of metoclopramide in improving symptoms of gastroparesis, including enhanced gastric emptying and reduced nausea and vomiting compared to placebo.
