Scientific Evidence
Pharmacological Effects: Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine but is fermented by colonic bacteria, leading to an increase in osmotic pressure and acidification of the colonic contents. This results in the retention of water in the colon, softening the stool and promoting bowel movements.
Clinical Trials: Clinical studies have shown that lactulose is effective in the treatment of chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. A study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology demonstrated that lactulose significantly reduced blood ammonia levels in patients with hepatic encephalopathy, leading to improved mental status and quality of life.
Additional Information
Transuloza paste may cause bloating and flatulence initially. These side effects usually subside with continued use. Ensure adequate fluid intake while using this medication.
