Description
Avodart (Dutasteride) Capsules 0.5 mg. №90
Composition
Active Ingredient: Dutasteride 0.5 mg.
Other ingredients: Mono- and di-glycerides of caprylic/capric acid, butylated hydroxytoluene, gelatin, glycerin, titanium dioxide, iron oxide red.
Mechanism of Action
Avodart works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) through the inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes. DHT is a hormone that contributes to prostate enlargement. By reducing DHT levels, dutasteride helps shrink the prostate gland, relieving urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Pharmacological Properties
Dutasteride is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that selectively inhibits both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of 5-alpha-reductase enzyme. This inhibition leads to a significant reduction in DHT levels, thereby addressing the underlying cause of BPH symptoms.
Indications for Use
Avodart capsules are indicated for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adult men with an enlarged prostate. The primary goals of treatment include symptom improvement, reduction in the risk of acute urinary retention, and decreased likelihood of needing BPH-related surgery.
Contraindications
Avodart is contraindicated in women, children, and pregnant women due to the potential risk to the male fetus. Individuals with known hypersensitivity to dutasteride or any other component of the product should avoid its use.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Avodart may include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders, and breast enlargement or tenderness. Serious allergic reactions are rare but seek immediate medical attention if any occur.
Usage Instructions
The recommended dosage for adults is one Avodart capsule (0.5 mg) taken orally once daily. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water, with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules. In case of a missed dose, take it as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose.
Benefits Compared to Analogues
Avodart has demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing the risk of BPH progression, improving urinary symptoms, and decreasing the need for surgical intervention compared to placebo. Its dual inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase isoforms sets it apart from other medications in the same class.
Suitable Patient Groups
Avodart is suitable for adult men with symptomatic BPH. It is not recommended for use in women, children, or pregnant individuals. Elderly male patients can also benefit from the therapeutic effects of Avodart with appropriate monitoring for adverse effects.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store Avodart capsules at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Ensure the container is tightly closed. Check the expiration date on the packaging and do not use the product beyond that date.
Packaging Description
Avodart comes in a package containing 90 capsules of dutasteride 0.5 mg each. The packaging is designed to maintain the integrity and stability of the capsules until the expiration date.
Clinical Evidence and Proven Effectiveness
Clinical studies have shown that Avodart (dutasteride) significantly reduces the risk of BPH progression, improves urinary symptoms, and lowers the need for surgical intervention compared to placebo. Long-term safety and efficacy data support the use of dutasteride in managing BPH symptoms effectively.
