Ambroxol increases the secretion of the glands of the respiratory tract, reduces the viscosity of bronchial mucus, stimulates the activity of the villi of the respiratory tract, and enhances the formation of surfactant in the lungs. These effects lead to increased sputum clearance (mucociliary clearance). Activation of fluid secretion and increased mucociliary clearance facilitate mucus clearance and reduce coughing.
The use of ambroxol increases the concentration of antibiotics amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin and doxycycline in sputum and bronchopulmonary secretions.

Pharmacodynamics
Indications
Secretolytic therapy in acute and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases associated with impaired bronchial secretion and weakening of sputum advancement.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity (allergy) to ambroxol or to other components of the drug.
Directions
For adults , take 1 capsule (75 mg) daily by mouth with plenty of liquid (such as water, tea, or fruit juice). Capsules should be swallowed whole without chewing. Ambrotard 75 can be taken with or without food.
In acute illness, you should consult your doctor if the symptoms do not disappear and / or worsen despite taking the drug. Ambroxol capsules should not be used for longer than 4-5 days without consulting a doctor.
Application features
When using mucolytic agents, incl. ambroxol hydrochloride, isolated cases of severe skin lesions such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Lyell’s syndrome (toxic epidermal necrolysis), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis have been reported. Basically, they could be explained by the severity of the underlying disease and/or concomitant therapy. In addition, in the initial stages of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell’s syndrome, patients may experience flu-like non-specific prodromal symptoms, such as fever, body pain (ache), rhinitis, cough, sore throat. As a result of their misjudgment, patients may have received medications for the symptomatic treatment of coughs and colds.
Ambroxol capsules should be used with caution in patients with gastric and / or duodenal ulcers.
In case of impaired renal function or severe liver disease, the drug should be used only after consulting a doctor. Ambroxol hydrochloride is metabolized in the liver and excreted from the body by the kidneys, therefore, in severe chronic renal dysfunction, accumulation of ambroxol and / or its metabolites in the liver is possible.
During treatment, it is necessary to drink enough fluids (juices, tea, water) to enhance the mucolytic effect of the drug.
With increased secretion of mucus, in violation of bronchomotor functions (for example, with such a rare genetically determined disease as primary ciliary dyskinesia), mucolytic agents (including ambroxol) should be used with caution due to the risk of accumulation of a large amount of mucus.
The “gelatin ambroxol capsules” sometimes present in the feces have already released the active substance during their passage through the digestive system and thus do not indicate the ineffectiveness of the drug.
