Ammonia solution belongs to drugs that irritate nerve endings. The mechanism of action of ammonia when inhaled consists in the reflex excitation of the respiratory center through the receptors of the upper respiratory tract – the termination of the trigeminal nerve.

When applied to the skin, it has an irritating and antimicrobial effect.

Main physicochemical properties: transparent, colorless, volatile, highly alkaline liquid with a pungent odor. During storage, the presence of sparkles and/or light turbidity is allowed.

Pharmacokinetics

The drug does not enter the bloodstream.

Indication

  • Unconscious state,
  • with insect bites.

Contraindication

Increased sensitivity to the drug.

Features of application

Local application is possible only on intact skin.

In case of accidental damage to the mucous membrane of the eye, rinse with water several times (for 15 minutes with a 10-minute break) or with a 3% solution of boric acid. Oils and ointments are not used. For damage to the nose and throat, use a 0.5% solution of citric acid or natural juices. In case of internal administration, drink water, fruit juice, milk, preferably 0.5% solution of citric acid or 1% solution of acetic acid until complete neutralization of stomach contents.

You should not violate the rules of use of the medicinal product, it can harm your health.

Directions

To stimulate the respiratory center as a means of first aid: a small piece of gauze or cotton wool moistened with an ammonia solution is carefully brought to the nostrils for 0.5 – 1 s. 

For insect bites, ammonia solution is applied externally in the form of lotions (the duration of the procedure is up to 30 seconds).

Children

The drug is not used for children under 3 years of age.

Overdose

Increased manifestations of adverse reactions. The therapy is symptomatic.
