Description
Carvedilol Tablets 25 mg. №30
Composition
The active ingredient in each tablet is Carvedilol 25 mg. Other ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, and magnesium stearate.
Mechanism of Action
Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with alpha-blocking activity. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances in the body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This results in decreased heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.
Pharmacological Properties
Carvedilol exhibits antihypertensive, antiarrhythmic, and neuroprotective properties. It also has antioxidant effects and improves cardiac function in heart failure patients.
Indications for Use
Carvedilol is indicated for the management of hypertension, heart failure, and post-myocardial infarction. It is beneficial in reducing cardiovascular mortality and hospitalizations in heart failure patients.
Contraindications
Carvedilol should not be used in patients with severe heart failure (NYHA class IV), liver impairment, bronchial asthma, or certain conduction disorders like second- or third-degree AV block or sick sinus syndrome. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Carvedilol include dizziness, fatigue, hypotension, bradycardia, and fluid retention. Rare but serious side effects may include bronchospasm, heart block, and hepatotoxicity. Patients should report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare provider.
Usage Instructions
The recommended starting dose of Carvedilol is one tablet (25 mg) per day, taken with food. The dose may be titrated by the healthcare provider based on individual response. It is usually administered twice daily. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided to prevent worsening of symptoms.
Benefits Compared to Analogues
Carvedilol offers the advantage of combined alpha and beta receptor blockade, providing comprehensive cardiovascular protection. Its neuroprotective and antioxidant properties differentiate it from other beta-blockers, making it a preferred choice in heart failure management.
Suitable Patient Groups
Carvedilol can be used in adult patients with hypertension, heart failure, or post-myocardial infarction. It is also suitable for geriatric patients, but caution is advised in patients with renal impairment. Pediatric use is limited and requires careful monitoring.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store Carvedilol tablets in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Avoid exposure to excessive heat or moisture. Check the expiration date on the packaging and do not use the tablets beyond this date.
Packaging Description
Carvedilol tablets are typically packaged in blister packs of 30 tablets each. The packaging should be intact and sealed upon purchase. Keep the tablets in their original packaging until ready for use to protect them from light and moisture.
