Pharmacological Effects: Valproic acid exerts its anticonvulsant effects by increasing the brain’s levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It also modulates voltage-gated sodium channels, reducing neuronal excitability.
Clinical Trials: Clinical trials have shown that valproic acid is effective in the treatment of various seizure types, including absence seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It has also been found to be beneficial in the management of bipolar disorder, reducing manic episodes and stabilizing mood.
