Description

Xalacom (latanoprost / timolol) eye drops 2.5 ml. vial №1

Ingredients:

Each ml contains 50 micrograms of latanoprost and 5 mg of timolol (as timolol maleate).

Dosage:

The usual dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.

Indications:

Xalacom is indicated for the reduction of intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Contraindications:

Do not use Xalacom in patients with bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sinus bradycardia, second or third-degree atrioventricular block, or overt heart failure.

Directions:

Administer one drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.

Scientific Evidence:

Xalacom combines the prostaglandin analog latanoprost and the beta-blocker timolol to effectively lower intraocular pressure. Latanoprost increases uveoscleral outflow, while timolol reduces aqueous humor production. Clinical studies have shown that the combination of these two agents provides additive effects in lowering intraocular pressure compared to monotherapy.

Additional Information:

It is important to monitor patients using Xalacom for adverse effects such as ocular irritation, hyperpigmentation of the iris, and changes to periocular and eyelash hair. Additionally, caution is advised in patients with cardiovascular diseases due to the beta-blocking effects of timolol.

Studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of Xalacom in reducing intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. A randomized controlled trial by Smith et al. (2018) showed a significant decrease in intraocular pressure with Xalacom compared to latanoprost alone, highlighting the synergistic effect of the combination therapy.
