Description

Xalatan (latanoprost) eye drops 0.005% 2.5 ml. №1 vial

Ingredients

Active ingredient: Latanoprost 0.005%. Other ingredients: benzalkonium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, and water for injection.

Dosage

Recommended dosage: 1 drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Do not exceed once daily as more frequent administration may reduce the intraocular pressure-lowering effect.

Indications

Xalatan eye drops are indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Contraindications

Do not use Xalatan eye drops if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Consult your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Directions

Before using, wash your hands. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instill 1 drop into the eye. Close your eye for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent contamination.

Scientific Evidence

Latanoprost, the active ingredient in Xalatan eye drops, is a prostaglandin analog that works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye, thereby reducing intraocular pressure. Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of latanoprost in lowering intraocular pressure and its role in the management of glaucoma.

Additional Information

It is important to use Xalatan eye drops as prescribed by your healthcare provider to achieve the desired therapeutic effect. Regular eye check-ups are essential to monitor the response to treatment and any potential side effects. Store the vial in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Pharmacological studies have shown that latanoprost exerts its effects by increasing uveoscleral outflow, which is the primary mechanism of reducing intraocular pressure. This action helps in the management of conditions like glaucoma where elevated intraocular pressure can lead to optic nerve damage and vision loss.

Clinical trials comparing latanoprost with other intraocular pressure-lowering agents have demonstrated its efficacy and tolerability in long-term use. The once-daily dosing regimen of Xalatan eye drops offers convenience and compliance benefits to patients, making it a preferred choice in the management of glaucoma.
