Pharmacodynamics
Fusidic acid is an antibiotic that is formed during the growth of Fusidium coccineum. Violates the protein synthesis of the microbial cell, depending on the dose, acts bacteriostatic or bactericidal. The drug has a powerful antibacterial effect on a wide range of gram-positive microorganisms – Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Corynebacterium minutissimum and Propionibacterium acnes, incl. on staphylococci resistant to the action of penicillin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin and other antibiotics. Fusicutan has the ability to act through intact skin. When applied topically, fusidic acid is active against Corynebacteria spp., Neisseria spp., Clostridia spp., Bacteroides spp.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, systemic absorption is negligible.
Indications
Fusicutan cream is indicated for the topical treatment of infectious skin diseases caused by bacteria sensitive to the action of fusidic acid (see section “Pharmacodynamics”). The cream is used to treat weeping skin diseases.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fusidic acid and other components of the drug. Do not apply Fuzicutan cream to the eye area.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions
Interaction studies have not been conducted. It is believed that interactions with drugs for systemic use are minimal, due to the insignificant systemic absorption of fusidic acid.
Application features
The development of resistance in the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus has been reported with topical application of fusidic acid. As with any antibiotic, prolonged or chronic use of fusidic acid may increase the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Butylhydroxyanisole may cause local skin reactions (eg contact dermatitis) or irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes. Cetyl alcohol and potassium sorbate can cause local skin reactions (eg contact dermatitis).
When using latex condoms during the treatment with Fusicutan cream of the anal area or genital area, it is possible that the stability of the condoms may be reduced to rupture under the action of excipients of white soft paraffin and liquid paraffin, which negatively affects the reliability of this method of contraception.
