For the full functioning of the thyroid gland, the daily supply of the body with iodine and selenium is important within the normal daily physiological requirement. Iodine is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Selenium is part of the enzymes that aid the absorption of iodine by the thyroid gland, and is involved in the conversion of thyroid hormones into an active form.
