Description
Ketotifen Syrup 50 ml
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Ketotifen Syrup is Ketotifen. Each 5ml of syrup contains 1mg of Ketotifen Fumarate.
Mechanism of Action
Ketotifen acts as a non-competitive histamine antagonist and mast cell stabilizer. It inhibits the release of allergic mediators, thereby reducing the allergic response.
Pharmacological Properties
Ketotifen possesses anti-allergic properties by preventing the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes. It also exerts stabilizing effects on mast cells, reducing bronchospasm and inflammation in asthma.
Indications for Use
Ketotifen Syrup is indicated for the prophylactic and chronic treatment of asthma. It is also recommended for the symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions, including allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis.
Contraindications
Ketotifen Syrup is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Ketotifen or any other ingredients present in the formulation. It should be avoided in patients with epilepsy and those with severe renal impairment.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Ketotifen Syrup may include drowsiness, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Rarely, allergic reactions or paradoxical bronchospasm may occur. Patients should seek medical attention if any severe side effects manifest.
Usage Instructions
Before use, the syrup should be shaken well. For adults and children over 3 years, the recommended dosage is 1 mg (5 ml) twice daily. Children aged 1 to 3 years should take 0.5 mg (2.5 ml) twice daily. The syrup can be administered with or without food. If a dose is missed, it should be taken promptly. However, if it is close to the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped without doubling the dose.
Benefits Compared to Analogues
Ketotifen Syrup offers the advantage of dual action as both an anti-allergic agent and a mast cell stabilizer, providing comprehensive relief for asthma and allergic conditions. Its efficacy in prophylactic asthma treatment sets it apart from some analogues that may lack this specific indication.
Suitable Patient Groups
Ketotifen Syrup is suitable for both pediatric and adult populations. Its well-established safety profile makes it a viable option for children, the elderly, and individuals with asthma or allergic conditions requiring long-term management.
Storage and Shelf Life
Ketotifen Syrup should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. The shelf life of the product is typically indicated on the packaging and should be strictly adhered to. Discard any expired medication safely.
Packaging Description
Ketotifen Syrup is typically packaged in a 50 ml bottle with a child-resistant cap for safety. The packaging should include clear instructions for use, dosage guidelines, and information on the active ingredients to ensure proper administration.
