Laktuvit Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

In the colon, lactulose is broken down by intestinal bacteria to low molecular weight organic acids. These acids lower the pH in the lumen of the colon and, due to the osmotic effect, increase the volume of intestinal contents. This stimulates the peristalsis of the large intestine and normalizes the consistency of feces. Constipation is corrected and the physiological rhythm of digestion is restored.

Indications

Constipation: regulation of the physiological rhythm of the intestine.
Conditions requiring relief of bowel movements (hemorrhoids, after operations on the large intestine and anorectal zone).
Portosystemic hepatic encephalopathy: treatment and prevention of hepatic coma and precoma.

Contraindications

Galactosemia, gastrointestinal obstruction, perforation of the digestive tract or the risk of perforation of the digestive tract, hypersensitivity to the active substance or other components of the drug.

Application features

A doctor’s consultation is recommended if:

painful symptoms in the abdomen of undetermined origin before starting treatment
the therapeutic effect within a few days of treatment is not enough.
Patients with lactose intolerance should use Lactuvit with caution.

Given the amount of sugar in the preparation, the dosage commonly used to treat constipation does not cause problems in diabetics. However, the dose for the treatment of hepatic (pre) coma is usually much higher, therefore, the sugar content of the drug should be taken into account when treating patients with diabetes mellitus.

Long-term use of the drug without selection of doses or improper use can lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalance.

This medicine contains lactose, galactose and a small amount of fructose. Therefore, patients with rare hereditary galactose or fructose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this drug.
