Levomycetin drops Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics.

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic: effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, rickettsiae, spirochetes, pathogens of trachoma, psittacosis, venereal lymphogranuloma; acts on strains of bacteria resistant to penicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamides. Weakly active against acid-fast bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, protozoa and clostridia. Resistance of microorganisms to chloramphenicol develops relatively slowly. In normal doses it acts bacteriostatically. The mechanism of antimicrobial action of chloramphenicol is associated with impaired protein synthesis of microorganisms.

Pharmacokinetics.

The drug penetrates well into tissues and body fluids; therapeutic concentrations of chloramphenicol when administered topically in eye drops are formed in the vitreous, cornea, iris, aqueous humor; the drug does not penetrate into the lens.

Indication
Conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis caused by drug-sensitive microorganisms.

Contraindication
Individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Skin diseases (psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections).

Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction
Interaction with topical application of eye drops with other drugs has not been established. In case of concomitant use of other topical ophthalmic drugs, an interval of at least 15 minutes should be observed between their use. Apply eye ointments last.

Features of application
Uncontrolled administration of chloramphenicol is not allowed, especially in pediatric practice.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
The drug is contraindicated during pregnancy. Breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment with the drug.

Ability to influence the speed of reaction when driving a car or working with other mechanisms
Within 1 hour after application of the drug (until vision clears) you should refrain from driving or operating other machinery.

Method of application and dosage
Adults and children 1 drop in each eye 3 times a day. The course of treatment is 5–15 days (depending on the nature and severity of the disease, the achieved therapeutic effect).

Children
To children under 4 weeks to appoint only on vital indications.

Overdose
Increased doses of chloramphenicol may lead to a temporary decrease in visual acuity. In this case, rinse the eye with running water.

Side effects
Local reactions, including swelling of the eyelids, itching, eye irritation and tearing, are possible. Allergic reactions, including rash, angioneurotic edema, urticaria, pruritus, skin flushing. Possible headache, dizziness.

Expiration date
2 years. The shelf life of the solution after opening the vial is 15 days.

Storage conditions
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C in the original package.
