Pharmacological properties
The active substance is ketoconazole, an imidazole dioxolane derivative. It has a fungicidal and fungistatic effect against dermatophytes (Trichophyton spp., Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum spp.) And yeasts (Candida spp., Pityrosporum spp.). The mechanism of action is aimed at suppressing the biosynthesis of ergosterol and changing the lipid composition of the fungal membrane.
The drug is active against staphylococci and streptococci.

Indications
Livarol is used to treat recurrent and acute vaginal candidiasis. It is also used to prevent the development of fungal infections of the genital organs in women with reduced immunity, long-term treatment with antibacterial drugs or other means that disrupt the natural vaginal microflora.

Contraindications
Livarol is not prescribed for women who have hypersensitivity to ketoconazole, as well as for patients in the first trimester of pregnancy.
With extreme caution, it is necessary to treat the prescription of the drug to children under 12 years of age, in the II and III trimesters of pregnancy, as well as during lactation.
Treatment with the drug can be combined with the appointment of other drugs, since ketoconazole has low resorption and has a predominantly local effect.

Application during pregnancy and lactation
Livarol is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy. When prescribing the drug in the II and III trimesters of pregnancy, as well as during breastfeeding, it is recommended to carefully weigh the ratio of benefits and harms from its use.

Method of administration and dosage
Livarol is administered intravaginally. It is recommended to empty the suppository from the packaging before use. The suppositories are inserted deeply intravaginally in the supine position. Livarol is prescribed 1 suppository per day. The course of treatment depends on the severity of the disease and can last from 3 to 5 days.
In the treatment of chronic candidiasis, the patient is prescribed one suppository per day for 10 days.
For ease of use, suppositories are housed in special contour packs with wings for maximum ease of removal. Suppositories should only be administered in a supine position.
It is strictly forbidden to arbitrarily interrupt the course of treatment when the symptoms disappear, as this can contribute to the transition of the disease into a chronic form.

Overdose
Due to the fact that ketoconazole is not actually absorbed into the bloodstream, overdose cases have not been officially reported during treatment with Livarol. However, when using Livarol in doses significantly exceeding therapeutic ones, some patients experience burning sensation, hyperemia and edema of the vaginal mucosa and external genital organs. To eliminate unwanted symptoms, the patient is recommended to douche with warm water to quickly cleanse the vagina.

Side effects
When using the drug, the development of side effects is very rarely observed, which quickly disappear after the drug is withdrawn. When the drug is prescribed to women who suffer from hypersensitivity to ketoconazole, patients may experience itching, burning, hyperemia and irritation of the mucous membrane of the vagina and external genital organs. Also, during treatment with the drug, the development of angioedema, dyspeptic disorders, dizziness and headaches is possible.
