The drug owes its action to the fact that it has the property of inhibiting the biosynthesis of prostaglandins – lipid mediator substances with physiological activity, derivatives of prostanoic acid.
By themselves, prostaglandins are not pain mediators, and do not cause inflammation. At the same time, these substances provide sensitization of the responsible receptors with respect to pain mediators (histamine and bradykinin).
As a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, ketorolac has the ability to block cyclooxygenase, reducing the production of prostaglandins, which blocks the development of inflammatory processes, as well as reducing the sensation of pain.
