Scientific Evidence
Metoclopramide works by blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, which helps to reduce nausea and vomiting. Studies have shown that metoclopramide is effective in managing symptoms of gastroparesis and improving gastric emptying.
Additional Information
Metoclopramide has been widely used in clinical practice for its prokinetic and antiemetic properties. It is considered a first-line treatment for gastroparesis and is well-tolerated in most patients. However, long-term use may be associated with side effects such as tardive dyskinesia.
Pharmacological Effects: Metoclopramide acts as a dopamine antagonist, stimulating gastrointestinal motility and enhancing gastric emptying. It also has antiemetic properties by blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.
Clinical Trials: A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology demonstrated the efficacy of metoclopramide in improving symptoms of gastroparesis compared to placebo. The study showed a significant improvement in gastric emptying and reduction in nausea and vomiting with metoclopramide treatment.
