Pharmacological properties
Mistol is an antimicrobial agent used in gynecology. Efficiency is provided by the presence of metronidazole in its composition, which is 5-nitroimidazole. The mechanism of its action is due to the ability to interact with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of cells of microorganisms. In this case, the production of nucleic acids is inhibited and bacteria die. Active against protozoa: Entamoeba histolytica, Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia lamblia, as well as facultative anaerobes Bacteroides spp. (Bacteroides ovatus, Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides distasonis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomіcron, Bacteroides vulgaris), Prevotella spp. (Prevotella buccae, Prevotella bivia, Prevotella disiens), Fusobacterium spp., Veіllonella spp., Some facultative obligate (Clostrіdium spp.), Facultative (Eubacterіum spp., Peptococcus spp., Peptostrobate. Gardnerella vaginalis. Aerobes are insensitive to metronidazole, but in the presence of mixed flora (anaerobes + aerobes), it acts synergistically with antibiotics.

Indications
Mistol is prescribed for the local treatment of bacterial vaginosis, nonspecific vaginitis, incl. Trichomonas.

Contraindications:

if you are allergic to metronidazole, nitroimidazole derivatives;

with intolerance to auxiliary components.

It is used with caution in blood diseases, leukopenia, in diseases of the central nervous system (for example, epilepsy), in liver failure.

Children
It is not used in pediatric practice.

Application during pregnancy and lactation
This medication is contraindicated during pregnancy.
The active components are able to penetrate into breast milk, therefore, breastfeeding during the treatment period should be canceled. You can resume feeding no earlier than 48 hours after the end of the use of this medication.

Method of administration and dosage
Mistol is used intravaginally (inserted into the vagina).
You must first release the candle from the packaging.

  • With trichomonas vaginitis: 1 suppository per day just before bedtime, the course is 7-10 days (in combination with taking the tablet form).
  • For nonspecific vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis: 1 candle / day before bedtime, course – 7-10 days.

The treatment should not last more than 10 days, it should be repeated more often 2-3 times a year.

Overdose
Symptoms of an overdose with Mistol: leukopenia, vomiting, abdominal pain, neuropathy, diarrhea, impaired coordination, paresthesia, metallic taste in the mouth, dizziness, convulsions.
Treatment: discontinuation, maintenance therapy.

Side effects:

  • Digestive disorders: dry mouth, nausea, change in taste, “metallic taste”, abdominal cramping, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea.
  • Local reactions: irritation, pain in the vagina, itching, burning, thick mucous membranes, white vaginal discharge, frequent urination, vaginal candidiasis, irritation of the penis and sexual partner.
  • Neurological disorders: headache, dizziness.
  • Changes in hematopoiesis: leukopenia, leukocytosis.
  • Allergic reactions: itching of the skin, urticaria, rash.
  • There may be a reddish-brown staining of urine.

Storage conditions and periods
Store at 15–25 ° С for no more than two years.
