Additional Information
Storage: Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
Pharmacological Effects: Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine but is fermented by gut bacteria in the colon. This fermentation process leads to an increase in osmotic pressure and acidification of the colonic contents, which softens the stool and promotes bowel movements.
Clinical Trials: Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of lactulose in the management of chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. In a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Gastroenterology, lactulose was found to significantly improve stool frequency and consistency in constipated patients compared to placebo.
