NovoNorm is a short-acting hypoglycemic (sugar-lowering) drug. It rapidly lowers the concentration of glucose in the blood by stimulating the secretion of insulin by the cells of the pancreas.
NovoNorm is prescribed for type 2 diabetes mellitus with ineffective physical activity, diet therapy. In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, it can be used in combination with thiazolidinediones, metformin in cases where it was not possible to achieve glycemic control with monotherapy.

NovoNorm composition and form of release

Indications
NovoNorm is a short-acting hypoglycemic (sugar-lowering) drug. It rapidly lowers the concentration of glucose in the blood by stimulating the secretion of insulin by the cells of the pancreas.
NovoNorm is prescribed for type 2 diabetes mellitus with ineffective physical activity, diet therapy. In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, it can be used in combination with thiazolidinediones, metformin in cases where it was not possible to achieve glycemic control with monotherapy.

Contraindications:

  • with allergies to components;
  • with type 1 diabetes mellitus;
  • with infectious diseases;
  • for major surgical interventions, other conditions requiring insulin therapy;
  • during pregnancy / lactation;
  • with severe violations of the liver;
  • with diabetic ketoacidosis;
  • with diabetic precoma / coma;
  • with the simultaneous appointment of gemfibrozil.

Clinical studies in patients over 75 years old and under 18 years old have not been conducted.
It is used with caution (careful observation is necessary) in case of mild / moderate liver dysfunction, malnutrition, chronic kidney failure, alcoholism, febrile syndrome, general serious condition.

Children
It is not used in pediatrics.

Application during pregnancy and lactation
No studies have been conducted, so the use is not recommended.

Method of administration and dosage
NovoNorm is prescribed as an addition to diet, physical activity in order to reduce the amount of glucose in the blood. The use of the medicine should be timed to coincide with food intake. The tablets are taken orally preprandially (before the main meals) 2, 3 or 4 times a day. It is recommended to take the pill 15 minutes before the main meal (let’s say taking the medication in the range from 0 to 30 minutes).
Patients who may be skipping meals or needing extra meals should be instructed accordingly about skipping or taking extra medication.
The dose is selected depending on the glycemia (blood glucose level) and glycosylated hemoglobin.
The recommended starting dose for individuals who have never received oral hypoglycemic drugs before is 0.5 mg before the main meal. Dosage adjustment is carried out once a week or every 2 weeks. If the patient switches from taking another hypoglycemic oral agent to treatment with NovoNorm, then the initial dose should be 1 mg before each main meal.
The maximum single dose is 4 mg, the total daily dose is 16 mg.

Overdose
Signs of an overdose: an excessive decrease in the concentration of glucose in the blood, the development of symptoms of hypoglycemia (increased sweating, dizziness, headache, tremors, etc.). In case of the appearance of these symptoms, appropriate measures should be taken to increase the level of glycemia (ingest foods rich in carbohydrates, dextrose). In severe hypoglycemia (impaired consciousness, coma), dextrose is administered intravenously.

Side effects:

  • Immune disorders: allergic reactions (generalized hypersensitivity, immunological reactions), redness, rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Metabolic disorders: hypoglycemia with loss of consciousness, hypoglycemic coma, hypoglycemia (anxiety, increased sweating, dizziness, tremors, difficulty concentrating, hunger).
  • Perceptual impairment: visual disturbances.
  • Digestive disorders: abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, liver dysfunction.

Storage conditions and periods
At 15-25 ° C. The shelf life of NovoNorm is 5 years.
