Description
Otrivin composition and form of release
It is produced in drops at a dosage of 0.05%. The active ingredient of the drug is xylometazoline hydrochloride.
Pharmacological properties
Otrivin is a vasoconstrictor nasal drops. The drug excites alpha-adrenergic receptors, therefore, when applied to the nasal mucosa, it causes vasoconstriction, while reducing swelling, redness, and facilitates nasal breathing.
Indications
Otrivin is used for the treatment of rhinitis arising from acute respiratory diseases, it is also used in the treatment of sinusitis, eustachitis, pollinosis and nasopharyngeal edema that occurs with otitis media. In addition, the drug can be used in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.
Contraindications
It is not prescribed for patients who have been diagnosed with tachycardia, atrophic rhinitis, arterial hypertension, severe forms of atherosclerosis, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, intolerance to xylometazoline hydrochloride, as well as a history of data on the transferred surgical intervention on the brain.
Appointment to patients who have diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular pathologies, intolerance to adrenergic drugs, the reception of which is accompanied by dizziness, arrhythmia, insomnia, increased blood pressure and tremor is possible only after the balance of benefits and harms from using the drug.
Children
Spray and drops at a dosage of 0.1% are not used in the treatment of children under 6 years of age. With extreme caution, it is necessary to treat the appointment of Otrivin in this dosage to patients who have been diagnosed with prostatic hypoplasia.
In addition, drops of 0.05% can be used in children under 6 years of age.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
The use of Otrivin in the treatment of women at the stage of pregnancy and lactation is possible only by decision of the doctor. When using the drug in the therapy of this category of patients, it is recommended to strictly observe the dosage.
Method of administration and dosage
In pediatric practice, when using Otrivin at a dosage of 0.05%, drops should be instilled after cleansing the nasal passages into each nostril. In the therapy of children under 6 years old, patients receive 1 or 2 drops from 1 to 3 times a day, over 6 years old – 2 or 3 drops from 3 to 4 times a day. The course of treatment is 10 days.
Patients over 6 years old should receive 2 or 3 drops 3 to 4 times a day, the duration of treatment is from 3 to 4 days. If the patient needs more prolonged therapy, then it is necessary to consult a doctor.
Nasal spray in a dosage of 0.1% for patients over 6 years of age is injected with 1 dose of the drug 3 to 4 times a day for 10 days.
Overdose
Poisoning symptoms: tachycardia, increased blood pressure, arrhythmia and confusion. In case of drug poisoning, symptomatic therapy is prescribed.
Side effects
With prolonged and frequent use in patients in the nasal mucosa, burning, tingling, irritation, hyperemia, edema and dryness of the nasal mucosa may occur. Also, some people experience the occurrence of such systemic disorders as dizziness, tachycardia, arrhythmia, visual impairment, allergic reactions, increased blood pressure, depression and insomnia.
Storage conditions and periods
It is recommended to store at room temperature in places out of reach of children. The shelf life is 2.5 years.
