Description

Picolax composition and form of release
The active ingredient is sodium picosulfate.
Release form – tablets of 7.5 mg.

Pharmacological properties
Pharmaceutical contact laxative. Strengthens intestinal motility, contributes to the accumulation of electrolytes and water in the lumen of the colon, as a result of which feces soften, and defecation is stimulated.
In addition, with the course use of this pharmaceutical agent, the growth and metabolic activity of normal intestinal microflora is stimulated.

Indications
Picolax is indicated for constipation. Also, its use is recommended in cases where easier bowel movements are required.

Contraindications
It is forbidden to use the drug in case of hypersensitivity to it, with intestinal obstruction, acute inflammatory bowel pathologies, severe dehydration (dehydration), ulcerative colitis, acute pathologies of the abdominal cavity organs (including acute peritonitis, appendicitis), as well as with nausea, abdominal pain and / or vomiting of unknown origin.
Cannot be used directly after operations on the digestive tract.

Children
It is used in pediatrics from 4 years old (2.5–5 mg), from 10 years old (5–10 mg).

Application during pregnancy and lactation
It is allowed to use Picolax during the indicated periods if, in the opinion of the treating doctor, the expected benefit from this medication significantly outweighs the potential threat to the fetus / child.
With the threat of termination of pregnancy, the drug is used only with extreme caution.

Method of administration and dosage
The drug is used orally (inside), preferably at night.
The development of a laxative effect is observed 6-12 hours after the drug is used.
Picolax should not be used in children without consulting a doctor. Children under four years old should not use 5 mg tablets, children under 10 years old – 7.5 mg.
Children over ten years of age and adults are used at 5-10 mg / day at a time.
For persistent and severe constipation, adults should receive 15 mg once a day.
Children four to ten years old are used at 2.5-5 mg / day.
The duration of use for children should be no longer than three days.
In adults, the duration of admission is set individually by the treating doctor; as a rule, it is no more than ten days.
Picolax should not be used daily or long-term if the cause of constipation has not been established.

Overdose
Long-term use of a laxative can lead to electrolyte and / or water imbalance.
High doses of this pharmaceutical agent can cause abdominal cramps, loose stools, and disturbances in water and electrolyte balance.
Chronic drug overdose is accompanied by the development of abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, secondary hyperaldosteronism, hypokalemia; possibly kidney damage.
In case of an overdose, it is required to discontinue the use of this pharmaceutical product and provide the patient with symptomatic treatment (in particular, correction of the water-electrolyte balance).

Side effects
With short-term use of the drug, side effects are rare.
With prolonged use in very high doses, there is a loss of sodium, potassium and other electrolytes, the development of dehydration, vomiting, seizures, dyspeptic symptoms, increased fatigue, nausea, drowsiness, pain / abdominal cramps, dizziness, diarrhea, flatulence, headache; fainting is possible.
Hypersensitivity reactions (including urticaria, angioedema, pruritus, skin rashes) may also occur.

Storage conditions and periods
Store at temperatures below + 25 ° C in a dark place.
The shelf life is two years.
