Scientific Evidence:
Pilocarpine, a parasympathomimetic agent, acts on the muscarinic receptors in the eye to stimulate the contraction of the ciliary muscle and increase the outflow of aqueous humor, thus reducing intraocular pressure. Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of pilocarpine in lowering intraocular pressure and managing glaucoma.
Additional Information:
Pilocarpine 1% solution is a well-established treatment for glaucoma and has been used for many years in ophthalmology. It is considered a first-line therapy for open-angle glaucoma due to its effectiveness and relatively low side effect profile. Patients using pilocarpine should be monitored regularly by their eye care provider to assess the response to treatment and manage any potential adverse effects.
