Composition and form of release
Protargol is available in powder for solution. The main active ingredient is protein silver.
Indications
Protargol is an antibacterial drug. Protein silver has a depressing effect on the growth of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Silver ions have a precipitating effect on bacterial proteins, which provides the drug with a pronounced bactericidal effect.
Protargol is an astringent, decongestant and antiseptic drug for topical use. The drug is used to treat inflammatory diseases of the mucous membranes of the urinary and respiratory tract. It is used to treat conjunctivitis, blennorrhea, otitis externa, gonorrheal urethritis, acute and chronic rhinitis, hypertrophic pharyngitis.
Contraindications
Protargol is not prescribed to patients who have been identified as hypersensitive to the active substance of the drug. In addition, the drug is not used in the treatment of pregnant women.
Protargol is not recommended for use in conjunction with drugs that contain papain, as it reduces their enzymatic effect. Also, when prescribing Protargol, it must be remembered that its long-term use can cause symptoms of intoxication in the patient.
Children
In pediatric practice, Protargol uses a 1% solution.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Protargol is unacceptable to use in the therapy of pregnant women, since the effect of the drug on fetal development has been little studied. The drug can be used in the treatment of women at the lactation stage only by the decision of the doctor and subject to refusal for the duration of treatment from breastfeeding.
Method of administration and dosage
Adult patients receive 1 or 2 drops in each nasal passage or ear canal 2 to 3 times a day. Duration of treatment is from 5 to 10 days.
Overdose
An overdose that occurred during treatment with Protargol is associated with the accumulation of high concentrations of silver ions in the patient’s body in the blood plasma. With an overdose of Protargol, patients experience skin discoloration and confused speech. The accumulation of silver in the patient’s body can cause the patient to develop various allergic reactions, accompanied by staining of the skin in a gray or dark blue tone, which is due to the fact that a chemical element reacts with various proteins present in the human body, as a result of which a certain pigment. In addition, the patient may develop symptoms of toxic liver damage, anemia and cardiomyopathy.
Side effects With prolonged use, some patients may experience various allergic reactions and skin discoloration.
Storage conditions and periods Protargol must be stored in a place out of the reach of children and protected from light. The shelf life of the product is 2 years.
