Pharmacotherapeutic group

Means used in ophthalmology. Dexpanthenol.

Pharmacological properties

Combined ophthalmic drug Siccaprotect (eye drops), which belongs to antimicrobial drugs for local use.
Consists of a combination of two active ingredients – dexpanthenol (provitamin B5) and polyvinyl alcohol.
Dexpanthenol, entering the skin cells, is rapidly converted to pantothenic acid, which is a component of coenzyme, playing an important role in the metabolism of each cell. Pantothenic acid is therefore essential for the protection, formation and healing of damaged skin and mucous membranes.
Polyvinyl alcohol is adhesive to the cornea and increases the viscosity of the eye drops.

Indications

Siccaprotect is intended for the treatment of ophthalmic problems, as “artificial tears”, in case of dry eye syndrome, including for:

  • symptomatic treatment of dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva caused by a decrease in lacrimal secretion, which may be associated with local and systemic diseases or a mechanical inability to close the eyelids;
  • moisturizing the eye while wearing hard contact lenses.

Dexpanthenol is a derivative of pantothenic acid. It has the ability to regenerate mucous membranes, normalize cell metabolism, accelerate mitosis and strengthen collagen fibers. It has a regenerating, vitaminizing and anti-inflammatory effect.
The body’s need for pantothenic acid increases with damage to the skin or tissues. This deficiency can be compensated for with the help of topical application of dexpanthenol, since this substance has the property of intensively penetrating all layers of the skin.
Due to its adhesive properties, polyvinyl alcohol increases the viscosity of the drug, which helps to prolong the retention of drugs on the cornea.

Contraindications

Not applicable if the patient has hypersensitivity (allergy) to one of the components of the drug.
If it is necessary to apply another drug for the eyes, then the patient should maintain a 15-minute time interval between using the drug.
The use of soft contact lenses when using this drug is unacceptable, since the benzalkonium chloride contained in it can cause reddening of the cornea and staining of contact lenses.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

During pregnancy, this drug should be used with great care and only as directed and under the supervision of a physician.
The attending physician must objectively assess the possible risks and positive consequences of using the drug.

Method of administration and dosage

The drug Siccaprotect is used 1 drop in the conjunctival sac of each eye. The number of instillations per day – up to 6 times.
In severe cases, when there is a need for this, instillation can be performed more often, up to 1 time every 60 minutes.
The duration of the treatment course continues depending on the symptoms and is determined by the attending physician, on an individual basis.
Artificial tear preparations can be used throughout life, unless the symptoms are temporary and associated with an underlying disease or drug treatment response.
During the instillation procedure, care should be taken to avoid any contact between the tip of the dropper bottle and the cornea of the eye or skin.

Overdose

Overdose cases have not yet been observed and, as a result, have not been described in the medical literature.
In case of careless intake of a significant amount of the drug, the stomach should be rinsed and sorbents should be taken.

Side effects

Usually, the use of this drug is well tolerated by patients without causing side effects. In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions have been observed in the form of:

  • lacrimation;
  • burning sensations;
  • pain and irritation in the eyes.

Some patients with significant corneal lesions have had cases of corneal calcification. The reason is the presence of phosphates in the preparation.
