Composition

1 capsule contains: silymarin – 70 mg.

Excipients: lactose, magnesium stearate (E 470).

Capsule shell: titanium dioxide (E 171), gelatin.

Pharmacological properties

This drug belongs to a group of hepatoprotective drugs that treat the liver and biliary tract.
The main active ingredient of this drug – silymarin – is a hepatoprotector created on a natural basis of plant origin. Milk thistle extract that contains silymarin. Silymarin includes a combination of extracts that are secreted from milk thistle, in particular, silibinin (the main component), silidanin, silicristin, and other flavonol derivatives.
Silymarin, contained in a significant amount in milk thistle, stimulates metabolic processes in liver cells (cellular metabolism). It also has the property of activating the synthesis of proteins, which are known to be the main building material of the human body.
Also, when using silymarin, phospholipids are synthesized more intensively inside hepatocytes. Also, the drug prevents the destruction of membranes in cells. As a result, the drug prevents toxins from entering the liver cells.

Indications

This drug Silarsil is used to treat liver diseases – both chronic and resulting from toxic damage to this organ, in particular:

  • cirrhosis of the liver;
  • fatty degeneration;
  • steatohepatitis.

It is also effective as a prophylactic agent for the danger of alcohol and drug intoxication.

Contraindications

The drug Silarsil in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or one of the auxiliary components.
It is not used in pediatrics until the age of 12.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

This drug is not recommended for use in the treatment of pregnant women, since no clinical studies have been carried out on this group of patients and the consequences of such a reception are unknown.
It is known that the drug itself is not toxic if taken without exceeding the recommended doses.
If it is necessary to take the drug during breastfeeding, then lactation should be suspended during treatment.

Method of administration and dosage

Adults and children over the age of 12 take 1 capsule 3 times a day. The maintenance dose is 1-2 capsules per day.
The drug is taken after eating, without chewing. The preparation is washed down with pure water, from 100 to 200 ml.
The duration of the treatment course is not limited by the manufacturer. On average, the attending physicians recommend taking this drug daily for at least 3 months.
Advanced age and renal failure are not an indication for dosage adjustments.
It should be remembered that although the drug can be used in the treatment of acute states of intoxication of the body and liver, it cannot eliminate the causes that cause such liver damage.
In particular, if the patient does not stop excessive consumption of alcohol, fatty, fried, stale or spicy food, then liver damage will continue, and this drug will only eliminate the consequences of such intoxication.

Overdose

At the moment, there has been no information about an overdose.
In case of overdose, theoretically, the side effects indicated in the corresponding section may increase.
No specific antidote has been identified.
In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment is recommended – gastric lavage, intake of enterosorbents, monitoring of vital signs.

Side effects

The drug rarely causes side effects and is usually well tolerated.
The following side effects are possible, such as increased hypersensitivity to the substances included in the drug. Hypersensitivity symptoms:

  • exanthema (in the form of a rash);
  • increased diuresis (urine discharge);
  • increased alopecia;
  • increased disorders of the vestibular apparatus (rarely);
  • diarrhea, flatulence, heartburn.

If the patient has unusual side effects not described in this section, you should temporarily stop taking the drug and consult your doctor for a possible change in the treatment regimen.
