Description
Augmentin (Amoxicillin Sodium) Powder for Suspension 400 mg/57 mg, 70 ml
Composition
Each 5 ml of reconstituted suspension contains 400 mg amoxicillin (as amoxicillin trihydrate) and 57 mg clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate).
Mechanism of Action
Augmentin combines amoxicillin and clavulanic acid to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid prevents degradation of amoxicillin by certain beta-lactamases, extending the spectrum of activity against resistant bacteria.
Pharmacological Properties
Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid enhances amoxicillin’s activity against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria, increasing efficacy against various pathogens.
Indications for Use
Augmentin is indicated for treating bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media, and sinusitis.
Contraindications
Avoid Augmentin if allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other penicillins. Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disorders or infectious mononucleosis.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and hypersensitivity reactions. Severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Usage Instructions
Shake the suspension well before each use. Administer orally with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Dosage depends on the infection severity and patient’s age.
Benefits Compared to Analogues
Augmentin’s unique combination offers broader antibacterial coverage compared to traditional penicillins. The addition of clavulanic acid helps combat resistance, making Augmentin effective against resistant strains.
Suitable Patient Groups
Augmentin is suitable for adults and children but requires dosage adjustment based on weight and severity of infection. Elderly patients may need dose modification due to decreased renal function.
Storage and Shelf Life
- Store Augmentin suspension in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Discard any unused portion after reconstitution as per the expiration date mentioned on the packaging.
Packaging Description
Augmentin powder for suspension is packaged in a 70 ml bottle with clear instructions for reconstitution. Each pack includes a measuring device for accurate dosing.
Clinical Evidence and Proven Effectiveness
Augmentin has been extensively studied in clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy in treating various infections. The synergistic action of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid enhances bacterial killing and minimizes resistance development.
