PHARMACOLOGICAL GROUP
Antifungal drugs for topical use.
ATX code D01A E15.
LAMIZIL CREAM PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Pharmacological. Terbinafine is an allylamine and has a broad spectrum of antifungal activity. Terbinafine in low concentrations has a fungicidal effect against dermatophytes, molds and some dimorphic fungi. Activity against yeast fungi, depending on their type, can be fungicidal or fungistatic.
Terbinafine specifically inhibits the early stage of sterol biosynthesis in the fungal cell membrane. This leads to a deficiency of ergosterol and intracellular accumulation of squalene, which causes the death of the fungal cell. Terbinafine works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase in the cell membrane of the fungus. This enzyme does not belong to the cytochrome P450 system. Terbinafine does not affect the metabolism of hormones or other drugs.
Pharmacokinetics. When applied externally, less than 5% of the dose is absorbed, therefore, the absorption of terbinafine into the systemic circulation is negligible.
After 7 days of treatment with Lamisil, cream, terbinafine concentrations in excess of those required for fungicidal action are present in the stratum corneum of the epidermis for at least 7 days after stopping treatment.
Indications
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to terbinafine or to any of the components of Lamisil.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER DRUGS AND OTHER INTERACTIONS
Unknown.
FEATURES OF APPLICATION
Lamisil cream is for external use only. Contact of Lamisil cream with the eyes should be avoided, as the drug may irritate them. In case of accidental contact of the cream in the eyes, they must be thoroughly rinsed with running water.
