Moxifloxacin is used in the treatment of eye infections, mainly infectious bacterial conjunctivitis, the causative agents of which are sensitive to moxifloxacin.
Description
Moxifloxacin composition and form of release
The main active ingredient is moxifloxacin.
The drug is marketed in the form of an ophthalmic solution, in 5 ml vials, at a dosage of 5 mg moxifloxacin per ml of the drug.
Pharmacological properties
Moxifloxacin belongs to the group of antibacterial antimicrobials, from the fluoroquinolone group, for use in ophthalmology.
The active substance is moxifloxacin. The considered pharmaceutical component, when used appropriately, has bactericidal properties.
It is active in a relatively wide group of pathological microorganisms of both gram-positive and gram-negative series, anaerobes, as well as bacteria of an atypical type and possessing acid resistance. In particular, it is effective in the fight against chlamydia, mycoplasma, legionella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, hemophilic bacteria, klebsiella, moraxella, enterobacteria, corynebacteria, bordetella, prevotella, clostridia, and other types of bacteria pathological for humans.
The mechanism of action is the ability to block enzymes that control some of the properties of DNA that are responsible for the reproduction of a harmful cell. The effect of the drug is dose-dependent.
Indications

Contraindications
The drug in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or to one of the auxiliary components.
Also contraindicated for:
- congenital or acquired lengthening of the QT interval;
- imbalance in electrolytes;
- bradycardia;
- heart failure with decreased left ventricular ejection;
- arrhythmia.
Do not use concomitantly with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Children
In pediatrics, it is used from the age of 1.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
The drug should not be administered during pregnancy.
If there is a need to use this drug during lactation, breastfeeding should be suspended for this period.
Method of administration and dosage
Moxifloxacin is applied by instillation into the eyes. Dosage – 1 drop in each sore eye three times a day. After instillation, you should pinch the nasolacrimal canal with your fingers to prevent the drug from entering the nasal mucosa.
Noticeable positive changes are noted on the 5th day of treatment, after which the therapy is continued for another 2-3 days.
If after 5 days no improvement is noted, the treatment tactics should be changed or the diagnosis revised.
Correction of dosage and duration of treatment is determined individually by the attending physician.
Overdose
Overdose can cause prolongation of the QT interval.
Symptomatic treatment is recommended, taking sorbents, especially when taking the drug orally.
Side effects
When treating with this drug, side effects may occur such as:
- nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, dyspepsia, flatulence, changes in taste;
- itching, allergic urticaria;
- dizziness, insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, asthenia, tremor, paresthesia, leg pain, convulsions, depression;
- tachycardia, peripheral edema, increased blood pressure, heart palpitations, chest pain;
- decrease in prothrombin level, increase in amylase activity;
- leukopenia, eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, thrombocytopenia, anemia;
- back pain, arthralgia, myalgia;
- vaginal candidiasis, vaginitis.
Storage conditions and periods
Shelf life – no more than 2 years from the date of issue indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer.
Storage temperature should not exceed 25 ° C.
