Ocoferon composition
Main active substance: interferon alpha-2b.
The excipients included in the preparation: sodium phosphate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, dextran, sodium chloride.

Release form
It is produced in the form of a dry powder for the preparation of an ophthalmic solution, which contains 1 million IU of interferon alpha-2b. The drug is also accompanied by a solvent – nipagin and water for injection in a volume of 5 ml.

Pharmacological properties
This drug Ocoferon belongs to the group of drugs-immunomodulators and immunostimulants used in ophthalmology.
The main active ingredient, interferon alfa-2b, is a sterile highly purified stable drug that is intended to be administered parenterally (bypassing the gastrointestinal tract).
This type of interferon is a water-soluble protein, whose molecular weight is determined in the region of 19 thousand 300 units. The substance is obtained by acting on bacteria that have genes for human leukocytes, which have the ability to encode the synthesis of interferons.
After its administration, interferon alfa-2-bi has an antiproliferative effect, attracting both cell cultures and xenografts of human neoplasms. It has a powerful immunomodulatory effect. It binds to cell membranes, initiating a chain of reactions inside cells, inducing some enzymes.

Indications

Contraindications
The drug in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or to one of the auxiliary components.
Also contraindicated for:

  • autoimmune diseases;
  • multiple sclerosis,
  • diabetes mellitus.

Children
In pediatrics, it is used from the age of 7.

Application during pregnancy and lactation
This drug should not be used when treating pregnant women.
If it is necessary to take the drug during breastfeeding, lactation is suspended.

Method of administration and dosage
Ocoferon is intended for eye instillation.
To prepare an ophthalmic solution, the bottle should be filled with 5 ml of the supplied solution. The drug should be mixed, but not shaken. 1 ml of the finished product contains 200 thousand interferon.
The recommended dosage for adults and children – 2 drops are instilled into the eyes every 2 hours, at least 6 times a day.
With a decrease in symptoms, you can instill 1 drop at a time.
The duration of the course of treatment is 7-10 days.
The maximum permissible daily dosage is no more than 500 thousand IU of interferon per day.
Take about 30 minutes between using this drug and other ophthalmic drugs.
It is necessary to start using the drug at the first signs of an incipient exacerbation of the disease.
It should be borne in mind that the drug does not have a systemic effect, therefore, simultaneously with ophthalmic drops, the interferon drug should be used systemically – rectally or in the form of injections.
If necessary, you can conduct additional preventive courses.

Overdose
Overdose cases have not been recorded at the moment.
In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment is recommended.

Side effects
The drug is usually well tolerated. Theoretically, when a patient’s hypersensitivity to one of the components of the drug appears, allergic reactions may occur in the form of:

  • angioedema;
  • rash, itching, allergic urticaria;
  • bronchospasm.

Expiration date – up to 2 years from the production date indicated on the package.
Storage temperature should not exceed 25 ° C.
