Plaquenil is used for the radical treatment of malaria, which is caused by the sensitive Plasmodium falciparum. However, it is not indicated for the treatment of malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains.

Made in the form of tablets. The main ingredient of the drug is hydroxychloroquine sulfate.

Contraindications
The drug is not prescribed if the patient has a history of hypersensitivity to hydroxychloroquine sulfate.
Also, the drug is not used if the patient suffers from retinopathy, hereditary lactose intolerance. It is unacceptable to use it in the treatment of pregnant women, lactating women and children under 6 years old with a body weight of less than 31 kg.
With extreme caution, the drug is used in the treatment of patients suffering from visual impairment, hematological diseases, severe neurological diseases, psychosis, late cutaneous porphyria, renal failure, deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, gastrointestinal pathologies, hypersensitivity to quinine.

Children
It is used for children from 6 years old.

Application for pregnancy and breastfeeding
Hydroxychloroquin sulfate is able to penetrate the placental barrier, but data on the use of the drug in the therapy of pregnant women are very limited, however, it is known that 4-aminoquinolines in therapeutic doses can have a negative effect on the central nervous system of the fetus, cause damage to the auditory nerve, hemorrhage into the retina and its abnormal pigmentation. In this regard, the use of the drug for this category of patients is possible only in extreme cases.
If you need to use Plakvenil during lactation, you should stop breastfeeding.

Method of administration and dosage
Plakvenil is taken by mouth to treat malaria. On the 1st day, in the first dose, 0.8 g is consumed, then after 6 or 8 hours, 0.4 g each. On the 2nd and 3rd days, 0.4 g is taken per dose.

Overdose
Overdose is especially dangerous for children, as taking 1 or 2 grams of the drug can be fatal. When taking the drug in high doses, the patient may experience headaches, blurred vision, convulsions, collapse, cardiac conduction disturbances.
To eliminate undesirable symptoms, the patient is given gastric lavage and high doses of activated carbon are taken. Parenteral administration of diazepam is also shown, if necessary, artificial ventilation of the lungs is carried out, as well as anti-shock therapy.

Side effects
During treatment, patients may experience severe disturbances in the work of the central and peripheral nervous systems, organs of vision, hematopoiesis and the gastrointestinal tract.
