Celecoxib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activity in animal models. It is believed that the mechanism of action of the drug is due to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, mainly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2); at therapeutic concentrations in humans, it does not inhibit the isoenzyme cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1). In animal models of colon tumors, celecoxib reduced the incidence and multiplicity of tumors.
