Description

Betadine (povidone iodine) solution 100 mg/ml, 30 ml. vial №1

Composition

1 ml of solution contains 100 mg of povidone iodine (which corresponds to 10 mg of active iodine), excipients: glycerol, nonoxynol 9, citric acid, anhydrous, sodium hydrogen phosphate (disodium hydrogen phosphate), sodium hydroxide, purified water.

Description: a dark brown solution with the smell of iodine.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Antiseptic and disinfectant. Released from the complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone on contact with skin and mucous membranes, iodine forms iodamine cells with proteins, coagulates them and causes the death of microorganisms. Has a fast bactericidal effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (with the exception of M. tuberculosis). Effective against fungi, viruses, protozoa.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied topically, almost no iodine reabsorption occurs.

Indication:

  • treatment and prevention of wound infections in surgery, traumatology, combustiology, dentistry;
  • treatment of bacterial, fungal and viral skin infections, prevention of superinfection in dermatological practice;
  • treatment of pressure sores, trophic ulcers, diabetic foot;
  • disinfection of the skin and mucous membranes of patients in preparation for surgical interventions, invasive studies (puncture, biopsy, injections, etc.);
  • disinfection of the skin around drains, catheters, probes;
  • disinfection of the oral cavity during dental operations;
  • disinfection of the birth canal during “small” gynecological operations (artificial termination of pregnancy, the introduction of an intrauterine device (IUD), coagulation of erosion and polyp, etc.).

Betadine Contraindications:

  • hypersensitivity to iodine and other components of the drug;
  • dysfunction of the thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism);
  • adenoma of the thyroid gland;
  • Duhring’s dermatitis herpetiformis;
  • simultaneous use of radioactive iodine;
  • premature and newborn babies.

With care: pregnancy and lactation, chronic renal failure.

The use of Betadine is not recommended from the 3rd month of pregnancy and during lactation. If necessary, in these cases, treatment is possible under individual medical supervision.

Metod of application and dose

For the treatment of skin and mucous membranes, it is used undiluted for lubrication, rinsing or as a wet compress. For use in drainage systems, a 10% solution is diluted 10 to 100 times. The solution is prepared immediately before use; diluted solutions are not stored.

Warnings, therapy control

In case of thyroid dysfunction, the use of the drug is possible only under the strict supervision of a physician.

The use of the drug in newborns is possible only if necessary, after examining the function of the thyroid gland.

Care should be taken with regular use on damaged skin in patients with chronic renal failure.

It is necessary to ensure that no excess solution remains under the patient.

Do not heat before use.

At the site of application, a colored film is formed, which remains until the release of the entire amount of active iodine, which means the cessation of the action of the drug.

Coloring on skin and fabrics can be easily washed off with water.

Do not use on insect bites, pets and wild animals.

Betadine Side effects

With frequent use on a large area of ​​the wounded surface and mucous membranes, systemic reabsorption of iodine may occur, which may affect the tests of the functional activity of the thyroid gland.

Hypersensitivity reactions to the drug, possibly an allergic reaction (hyperemia, burning, itching, swelling, pain), which requires discontinuation of the drug.

Interaction

Incompatible with other disinfectants and antiseptics, especially those containing alkalis, enzymes and mercury.

In the presence of blood, the bactericidal effect may decrease, however, with an increase in the concentration of the solution, the bactericidal activity may be increased.

Storage terms and conditions

Shelf life

3 years. Store an open bottle no more than 3 months. Do not use after the expiration date stated on the package.

Storage conditions

At a temperature not higher than 25 ° C.
