Scientific Evidence
Digoxin, a cardiac glycoside, works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium ATPase pump, leading to increased intracellular calcium levels. This results in enhanced myocardial contractility and improved cardiac output in heart failure. Studies have shown that Digoxin reduces hospitalizations and improves symptoms in patients with heart failure (Ahmed et al., 2006).
Additional Information
It is important to monitor serum digoxin levels regularly to ensure therapeutic levels are maintained. Patients should be educated on the signs of digoxin toxicity, such as nausea, vomiting, and visual disturbances. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
Pharmacological Effects
Digoxin’s pharmacological action involves its ability to increase the force of myocardial contraction, slow the heart rate, and reduce conduction velocity through the atrioventricular node. These effects make it a valuable medication in the management of heart failure and certain arrhythmias.
Clinical Trials and Comparative Effectiveness
Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of Digoxin in improving symptoms and reducing hospitalizations in patients with heart failure when used in conjunction with standard therapies (Digitalis Investigation Group, 1997). Comparative studies have shown Digoxin to be equally effective or superior to other heart failure medications in certain patient populations.
