Pharmacological properties
Miramistin is an antiseptic (disinfectant) agent that has a wide range of antimicrobial action, including hospital strains of pathogens that are resistant (resistant) to antibiotics.
The drug has a bactericidal effect (kills bacteria) against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus sp., Streptococcus pneumoniae and others), gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonasae ruginosa, Escherichia colі, Klebsiella spp. And others), aerobic bacteria, including anaerobic bacteria with multi-antibiotic resistance. The solution also has an antifungal effect on ascomycetes of the genus Aspergіllus, genus Penicillium, yeast (Torulopsis gabrata, Rhodotorula rubra, etc.), yeast-like fungi (Candida tropicalis, Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Pityrosporum, etc.), dermatitis, etc. Trіchophyton mentagrophytes, Trіchophyton rubrum, Trіchophyton verrucosum, Trіchophyton schoenleini, Epіdermophyton Kaufman-Wolf, Trіchophyton violacent, Epіdermophyton floccosum, Mіcrosporum canis, Microsporum gypseum diseases) against other fungal diseases. The drug has an antiviral effect, is active against complex viruses (herpes virus, VIL). Also acts on the causative agents of sexually transmitted diseases (Chlamydia spp., Treponema spp., Trichomonas vaginalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae), effectively prevents the infection of burns and wounds. It activates regenerative processes. Stimulates protective reactions at the site of application, by activating the digestive, absorptive capacity of phagocytes, stimulates the activity of the monocytic-macrophage system. Also, the solution has a pronounced hyperosmolar activity, as a result of which it absorbs purulent exudate, relieves wound, perifocal (around the wound) inflammation, contributing to the formation of a dry scab. Does not damage granulation tissue, viable skin cells, does not violate marginal epithelization. It has no local irritant or allergenic properties.
When applied topically, it does not have the ability to be absorbed through the skin, mucous membranes.
Indications
Miramistin is prescribed:
- in otorhinolaryngology – for the treatment of acute / chronic otitis media, tonsillitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis;
- children from 3 years of age are used to treat acute pharyngitis, exacerbation of chronic tonsillitis;
- in dentistry – for the treatment / prevention of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity (gingivitis, stomatitis, periodontitis, periodontitis); for hygienic processing of removable dentures;
- in surgery / traumatology – for the prevention of suppuration, treatment of purulent wounds, inflammatory processes from the side of the musculoskeletal system;
- in obstetrics / gynecology – for the prevention / treatment of suppuration of postpartum injuries, postpartum infections, perineal wounds, vagina, inflammatory diseases (endometritis, vulvovaginitis;
- in combustiology: for the treatment of superficial or deep burns of II / IIIA degree, preparation of burn wounds for dermatoplasty;
- in dermatology / venereology – for the treatment / prevention of pyoderma (purulent skin lesions), dermatomycosis, candidiasis of the skin or mucous membranes, mycoses of the feet; for individual prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, herpes of the genitals, genital candidiasis and others);
- in urology – for the treatment of acute / chronic urethritis, specific urethroprostatitis (gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, chlamydia) or non-specific nature.
Contraindications
Allergy to drug components.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Allowed only on the recommendation of a doctor.
Method of application and dosage
Miramistin solution is ready for use. Apply topically to adults.
- Surgery, traumatology, combustiology. For prophylactic and therapeutic purposes, Miramistin® irrigates the surface of wounds and burns, loosely tamponade wounds and fistulas, fix gauze swabs soaked in antiseptic. Repeat the treatment 2-3 times a day for 3-5 days. The method of active drainage of wounds and cavities with a daily consumption of up to 1 liter of the drug is effective.
- Obstetrics and gynecology. To prevent postpartum infection, use as vaginal irrigation before delivery (5-7 days), in delivery after each vaginal examination and in the postpartum period as intravaginal tampons soaked in 50 ml of the drug with exposure for 2 hours for 5 days.
During childbirth by cesarean section, the vagina is treated immediately before surgery, during the operation – the uterine cavity and incision on it, and in the postoperative period, tampons soaked in the drug are injected into the vagina with exposure for 2 hours for 7 days. Treatment of inflammatory diseases of the female genital organs should be carried out for 2 weeks, by intravaginal administration of tampons with the drug, treatment of the skin of the external genitalia, as well as by electrophoresis. - Dermatology. Treatment of candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes, mycoses of the feet and large folds should be carried out by applications 2-4 times a day.
- Venereology. For individual prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, miramistin solution is effective if used no later than 2 hours after sexual intercourse. Insert the contents of the vial into the urethra with a urethral nozzle – 2-3 ml (men), 1-2 ml (women), into the vagina – 5-10 ml for 2-3 minutes. After the procedure, it is not recommended to empty the bladder for 2 hours. Treat the skin of the inner surface of the thighs, pubis, external genitalia.
- Otorhinolaryngology. In purulent sinusitis, the maxillary sinus should be flushed with a sufficient amount of drug during the puncture. In the treatment of tonsillitis, pharyngitis and laryngitis, gargle with Miramistin® solution 3-4 times a day. The amount of drug per rinse is 10-15 ml. In otitis media, a swab soaked in the drug should be injected into the external auditory canal 4-6 times a day for 10-14 days.
- Dentistry. In the treatment of periodontitis, miramistin solution is injected into the periodontal pockets on the tourniquets with subsequent applications to the gums for 15 minutes. At exacerbations to wash Miramistin® periodontal pockets by means of the syringe and to enter into an abscess cavity of turunda with drug. After vestibuloplasty and frenulectomy, the drug should be used in the form of baths on an outpatient basis. For stomatitis, gingivitis, it is recommended to rinse the mouth with 10-15 ml of the drug 3-4 times a day. For the purpose of hygienic treatment of removable prostheses, leave them overnight in a solution of miramistin, before using the prosthesis thoroughly rinse under running water.
Children
As there is insufficient experience with the use of miramistin in children, it should not be used in pediatric practice.
Overdose
Not described.
Side effects
There may be a slight burning sensation at the application site, which disappears on its own after 15–20 s. Allergic manifestations are also possible.
