Pharmacological properties
Mucaltin is an expectorant and phlegm-thinning drug. It is used to relieve coughs in diseases of the lower respiratory tract. The tablets have a pronounced expectorant effect, which is realized by stimulating the work of the bronchial glands, as a result, additional production of mucous compartments occurs, the consistency of mucus becomes more liquid, viscous and sticky sputum liquefies. Also, the drug helps to increase the activity of the ciliated (ciliated) epithelium, due to which there is a relatively rapid excretion of liquefied pathological mucous formations from the respiratory canals and bronchi during coughing. In addition, Mukaltin has a moderate anti-inflammatory effect, envelops the mucous layer of the respiratory tract, due to which a protective film is formed and mucosal irritation does not occur, damaged tissues are quickly restored.
Indications
Mucaltin is prescribed for “rough” wet cough (unproductive), when sputum is coughing up with great difficulty, and also for dry cough in order to convert it into a productive moist and softer cough. It is important to understand that this drug does not relieve cough, it only relieves it.
This medicine is used only when cough is accompanied by diseases of the lower respiratory tract, and in diseases of the upper floors of the respiratory tract, taking antitussives is not advisable.
Mucaltin is indicated for use in the following conditions / diseases:
- pneumonia (pneumonia);
- obstructive bronchitis, including its chronic form;
- inflammation of the tracheal mucosa (tracheitis), bronchi (bronchitis), tracheobronchitis;
- emphysema of the lungs (pathological expansion of the air spaces of the bronchioles);
- bronchiectasis (chronic suppurative process in dilated, deformed bronchi);
- pulmonary tuberculosis with signs of bronchitis;
- bronchial asthma;
- pneumoconiosis (an occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of industrial dust, characterized by the development of a fibrotic process in them);
- bronchiectasis (local expansion of the bronchi);
- other acute / chronic diseases.
Contraindications
This herbal medicine has practically no contraindications. Mucaltin should not be prescribed to children or adults with hypersensitivity (allergy) to marshmallow, other plants of the Malvaceae family, auxiliary components. Also, this medicine is not used in children under 3 years of age, especially with acute peptic ulcer disease, erosions of the stomach / duodenum.
In order to avoid difficulties in coughing up already separated sputum, Mukaltin should not be used in parallel with antitussive pharmacological agents, in particular, drugs containing codeine.
Children
The drug should be used in children from 1 year old.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
The use of Mucaltin during pregnancy is allowed, but only under the supervision of the attending physician.
Given the presence of marshmallow extract in the medicine, it should be taken with caution in the first trimester.
The dosage regimen of this drug during pregnancy is determined by the doctor and usually does not differ from the general dosage regimen for an adult (1-2 tablets x 3-4 times / day before meals). The method of using the tablets during pregnancy is similar to the standard one, but sometimes it is recommended not to dissolve the tablet, but to take it crushed with a glass of warm water (boiled), in order to avoid the occurrence of dyspeptic symptoms. Before starting the appointment, you need to consult a doctor.
Method of administration and dosage
Mucaltin should be taken 30-60 minutes before the intended meal. Traditionally, the tablet is sucked in the mouth until it is completely dissolved. You can also dissolve the required dose of the drug in 200 ml of warm water, juice, or another drink (this will be especially appropriate for treating children, as well as people who cannot stand the taste of the medicine).
An adult usually needs 1–2 tablets (50–100mg) per dose, and the number of daily doses ranges from 3 to 4. Children from 12 years old, adolescents are shown the “adult” dosage. For children 3-12 years old, the dose is prescribed by a doctor – usually he prescribes taking 1 tablet x3 times / day (every 4 hours), and for children 1-3 years old – 0.5-1 tablets x3 times / day, for children under one year old – 0.5 tablets x3 times / day.
The duration of the treatment course depends on the severity of the course of the disease (severity of symptoms), the rate of appearance of the drug effect, and is usually 7-14 days. During the period of taking the tablets to accelerate the therapeutic effect, it is recommended to take a large volume of liquid.
Mucaltin can be administered concurrently with other pharmacological agents used to treat bronchopulmonary diseases.
The drug is not used simultaneously with pharmacological agents containing codeine, other antitussives, as this will make it difficult to cough up liquefied sputum.
