Pirantel belongs to the group of antihelminthic drugs that are used against sensitive immature and sexually mature forms of helminths. The action of the drug leads to paralysis of helminths, after which they leave the body together with feces.
Description
Pirantel Composition The active ingredient of this drug is Pyrantel 250 mg in 5 ml of the drug, as well as additional substances: sodium benzoate, sorbitol solution that does not crystallize, sodium carmellose, glycerin, polysorbate 80, aluminum magnesium silicate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, simethicone emulsion, apricot flavor, sodium hydroxide, citric acid monohydrate, purified water.
Release form
A cardboard box contains one dark-colored bottle of 15 ml, a measuring spoon and instructions for use.
The drug is produced in the form of a light yellow suspension for oral administration, which has a characteristic odor. It may precipitate, but after shaking it forms a homogeneous suspension.

Indications
The drug Pirantel is used and prescribed for enterobiasis, ankylostomiasis and ascariasis.
Contraindications
The use of the drug is contraindicated in myasthenia gravis, in patients with individual intolerance to the components of this drug, while taking it with piperazine, and in children weighing less than 10 kg.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
It is possible to use Pirantel for women during pregnancy if, in the opinion of the attending physician, the intended benefit to the mother is significantly higher than the potential risk to the fetus. The drug is contraindicated for lactating women.
Method of administration and dosage
Pirantel is administered orally, both during meals and after.
The drug may precipitate, so shake well before use.
Adults usually take the drug in tablet form, but if necessary, it can be used as a suspension.
The recommended dose for ascariasis and enterobiasis is 10-12 mg per kg:
- Children weighing more than 10 kg, the dose is 2.5 mg per 10 kg in one dose;
- For adult patients weighing up to 75 kg, the dose is 15 mg in one dose;
- For adult patients weighing more than 75 kg, the dose is 20 mg in one dose.
In order to completely get rid of parasites with enterobiasis, it is necessary to adhere to strict hygiene rules for all family members. After 3 weeks, it is advisable to take a second dose of the drug in order to prevent re-infection.
For ankylostomiasis caused by Necator americanus or Ancylostoma duodenale, in endemic areas or in case of severe invasion, the dose is 20 mg per kg 1-2 times a day for 2-3 days:
- Children weighing more than 10 kg, the dose is 5 mg per 10 kg in one dose;
- For adult patients weighing up to 75 kg, the dose is 30 mg in one dose;
- For adult patients weighing more than 75 kg, the dose is 40 mg in one dose.
For Ancylostoma diodenale infection, a dose of 10 mg / kg once may be sufficient.
Overdose
Intoxication with the drug is characterized by the following symptoms: dizziness, blurred vision, sweating, disorientation in space, dizziness when changing body position, loss of consciousness, general weakness or feeling of fatigue. In case of an overdose, such negative reactions can also occur as: arrhythmia, muscle weakness and tremors, muscle spasm, exhaustion, lack of appetite, asphyxia, diarrhea, abdominal pain. May also be: headache, nausea and vomiting, insomnia or drowsiness, skin rashes, agitation, liver damage.
If signs of overdose appear, symptomatic treatment should be carried out.
Side effects
The use of the drug can cause: nausea, impaired appetite, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain and diarrhea, impaired hearing and vision, increased fatigue, tenesmus, weakness. Also, manifestations of such side effects are possible: paresthesia, headache, ataxia, dizziness, urticaria, drowsiness, skin rashes, insomnia and hallucinations with disorientation. In people who are prone to allergies, taking the drug can cause allergic reactions.
Storage conditions and periods
Store Pirantel in the following conditions: original packaging, temperature up to + 25 ° C and away from children. After the bottle has been opened, it must be stored for no more than 21 days with a tightly closed lid. The shelf life of this product is 36 months.
