This drug PMS-Ursodiol is used in the complex treatment of diseases of the hepatobiliary system. In particular, they are used for: dissolution of X-ray-negative cholesterol gallstones no more than 15 mm in diameter in patients with a functioning gallbladder, regardless of the presence of stones; treatment of biliary reflux gastritis; treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) in the absence of decompensated liver cirrhosis (in the initial stage); treatment of hepatobiliary disorders in cystic fibrosis in children 6-18 years old.
Description
PMS-Ursodiol Ingredients
Main active ingredient: ursodeoxycholic acid.
Auxiliary components: sodium starch, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, cellulose, polyethylene glycol, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, polyethylene glycol.
Release form
The drug is sold in capsules, each containing 500 mg of ursodeoxycholic acid.
Pharmacological properties
This drug PMS-Ursodiol belongs to the group of drugs that are used in the treatment of the hepatobiliary system.
The active component of the drug is ursodeoxycholic acid.
A similar type of acid is found in bile secreted by the human liver. Regular use of this drug leads to a decrease in the filling of bile secretions with cholesterol substances.
The absorption of cholesterol by the intestines is suppressed and its excretion into bile decreases.
With regular use of this drug, the crystals that form gallstones gradually dissolve. This effect is believed to be due to cholesterol dispersion.
Also, taking the drug causes the activation of the secretory properties of hepatocytes. Immunoregulatory processes are also activated.
It helps to reduce changes in the quality of tissues in the liver with cystic fibrosis, in the early stages of this disease.
Indications
This drug PMS-Ursodiol is used in the complex treatment of diseases of the hepatobiliary system. In particular, they are used for:
- dissolution of X-ray-negative cholesterol gallstones no more than 15 mm in diameter in patients with a functioning gallbladder, regardless of the presence of stones;
- treatment of biliary reflux gastritis;
- treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) in the absence of decompensated liver cirrhosis (in the initial stage);
- treatment of hepatobiliary disorders in cystic fibrosis in children 6-18 years old.
Contraindications
The drug in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or one of the auxiliary components.
Also contraindicated for:
- acute inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts;
- obstruction of the bile ducts;
- frequent cases of hepatic colic;
- radiopaque calcified gallbladder stones;
- violations of contractility of the gallbladder.

Children
It is used for children from 6 years old.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
This drug is contraindicated for pregnant women.
If it is necessary to take the drug during breastfeeding, lactation is suspended.
Method of administration and dosage
PMS-Ursodiol is taken orally at night. The dosage is calculated individually, at the rate of 10 mg per 1 kg of patient weight.
So, with a weight of up to 60 kg, 500 mg are taken, with a weight of 61-80 kg – 750 mg each, with a weight of 81 to 100 kg – 1000 mg each and with a weight of more than 100 kg – 1250 mg of ursodeoxycholic acid at the same time, drinking large the amount of water.
Do not skip doses of the drug.
To dissolve stones in the gallbladder, you need to take it for six months to 1 year, depending on the size of the stones.
If, after 12 months, the size of the stones does not change, the intake should be discontinued.
Biliary reflux gastritis is treated with 250 mg ursodeoxycholic acid daily for 10-14 days.
The dose and duration of treatment can be increased by the decision of the doctor.
The patient should consult a doctor if the symptoms of the disease did not disappear during the use of the drug or if adverse reactions are observed that are not indicated in the instructions for medical use of the drug.
Overdose
In case of overdose, diarrhea may occur.
If diarrhea is too prolonged, threatening dehydration, treatment should be discontinued.
Side effects
The use of this drug can cause adverse reactions, such as, in particular:
- pasty stools, diarrhea;
- pain in the right hypochondrium;
- Calcification of gallstones (extremely rare)
- allergic urticaria, itching, rash;
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, angioedema, bronchospasm;
- peripheral edema, shortness of breath, headache.
If side effects occur, the drug should be discontinued, symptomatic therapy should be undertaken, consult a doctor and the treatment regimen should be adjusted.
Storage conditions and periods
The shelf life is 5 years.
The storage temperature should not exceed 30 ° C.
