Scientific Evidence
Lactulose, the active ingredient in Prelaxan syrup, works by drawing water into the colon, softening the stool and increasing bowel movements. Studies have shown that lactulose is effective in treating chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy by reducing ammonia levels in the body.
Additional Information
Prelaxan syrup is well-tolerated with minimal side effects such as bloating or flatulence. It is considered safe for long-term use. It is important to drink an adequate amount of water while using this medication to prevent dehydration.
Pharmacological Effects: Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine but is fermented by gut bacteria in the colon. This fermentation process leads to the production of short-chain fatty acids and lactic acid, which acidify the colonic contents, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and softening the stool.
Clinical Trials: Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of lactulose in the treatment of constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. A study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology showed that lactulose significantly reduced blood ammonia levels in patients with hepatic encephalopathy, leading to improved cognitive function.
