Pharmacological properties

Tobramycin is a fast-acting bactericidal antibiotic of the aminoglycoside group. Its main action is aimed at bacterial cells and consists in inhibiting the complex of polypeptides and synthesis in ribosomes.

Tobramycin resistance has several different mechanisms of occurrence, including changes in ribosomal subunits in the bacterial cell, disruption of tobramycin transport into the cell, and inactivation of tobramycin by a group of adenylating, phosphorylating, and acetylating enzymes. The genetic information for the production of inactivating enzymes can be carried in the chromosomes or plasmids of bacteria. Cross-resistance to other aminoglycosides may occur.

Indications

Tobrex eye drops is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside group. The drug has a bacteriostatic effect and blocks the 30S ribosome subunit, thus disrupting protein synthesis in microorganisms, which leads to their death. It is effective against staphylococcus and streptococcus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, as well as other gram-positive and gram-negative pathological microorganisms. The drug is not used to treat streptococci D. Tobrex is used to treat eye infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms that are sensitive to the action of the drug, such as keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis. In addition, the drug is used to prevent infectious lesions during eye surgery.

Contraindications

Tobrex eye drops is not prescribed if the patient suffers from hypersensitivity or intolerance to tobramycin, as well as other components of the drug.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

Tobrex is prescribed with great care for the treatment of pregnant women and only in cases where the benefits of its use outweigh the risk of negative effects on the fetus. When using the drug to treat women in the lactation stage, it is recommended to stop feeding during therapy.

Method of administration and dosage

Tobrex eye drops is administered by drip. Before using the drug, it is recommended to wash your hands thoroughly to prevent infection of the conjunctiva of the eye. The drug is administered in 1 or 2 drops into the conjunctival sac, the frequency of use of the drug depends on the severity of the inflammatory process. In the acute period, Tobrex is recommended to be instilled every 30 or 60 minutes, in all other cases, the drug is instilled every four hours.

Overdose

There are no data on cases of general violations in case of overdose, however, with too frequent instillation of the eyes (more than 30 minutes), reddening of the conjunctiva, lacrimation and feelings of discomfort and burning may occur. In the event of the appearance of undesirable symptoms, it is recommended to adjust the dosage of the drug and the frequency of injections or refuse to use it.

Side effects

Most often, the use of Tobrex does not cause any negative consequences, however, in rare cases, with individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, local allergic reactions may develop, manifested by lacrimation, photophobia, edema and redness of the eyelids.
