Additional Information
Maalox tablets are a well-established over-the-counter remedy for digestive issues. They work by neutralizing excess stomach acid, providing fast and effective relief. It is important to follow the recommended dosage and not exceed the daily limit to avoid potential side effects such as diarrhea or constipation.
Pharmacological Effects: Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide work by neutralizing or reducing the production of stomach acid. Aluminum hydroxide can bind phosphate in the gut, making it useful in managing hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease. Magnesium hydroxide has a laxative effect, aiding in relieving constipation.
Clinical Trials: A study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that a combination of aluminum and magnesium hydroxide was effective in reducing symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) compared to a placebo. The trial demonstrated a significant improvement in heartburn and acid regurgitation in the group using the antacid.
